Hard Fort

written for Laura Trevail

For a long time I only knew Laura by sight: at events at the Arts Collective, in spaces where our interests in writing would overlap. Then she told me a story about how we’d interacted on Twitter during COVID and I realised the real power of being honest and yourself in online spaces.

Sometimes it takes something given to you with care and trust to alter the fabric of a relationship. That happened for me in a tea shop on Leigh Broadway and ever since, the harmony and calm I get whenever I see L in a public space is unlike anything else I experience.

Some people are simply superb and unique by their existence alone. Some people do amazing things and you are privileged to see them do so. Then there are those who are an almost mystic combination of both and you wish, one day, that could be you.

L is a very special person as a result.

Hard Fort

their questions part of the learning process
even when there are no responses to provide
how to travel has never been a problem
moving is the workable solution I decide

how extraordinary dreaming can release
a previously closeted mind how to redefine
flights of fancy into practical employ
of romance ambition sympathy they said

even when you are uncertain of where to start
a previously unconsidered moment may define
how extraordinary it is simply to exist
answers that are uncovered by their mind
